One dead, one injured following crash on Highway 91 in Winnebago County
The crash caused a part of the road to be closed for about seven hours Sunday morning
TOWN OF NEPESUKUN, Wis. (WBAY) - UPDATE: Authorities say one man is dead and another is injured following a two vehicle crash during the overnight hours.
According to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office, a crash - described by a passerby as severe - was reported at about 3 a.m. on State Highway 91 near Wall Street in the Town on Nepeuskun, located south of Omro.
The Sheriff’s Office says their preliminary information shows a black BMW headed west on Highway 91 crashed head on into a maroon Ford Fusion that was headed east on the same roadway.
The driver of the Fusion, identified as a 57-year-old Berlin man, died at the scene due to his severe injuries, according to the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office.
Meanwhile, authorities say a 24-year-old Berlin man was driving the BMW, and he suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Their names have not been released as of this time.
Neither of the vehicles had any other passengers in them.
Although the crash closed a stretch of the road for about seven hours, the area has since reopened to traffic.
An investigation is ongoing.
No information has been released as to what caused the crash.
Authorities add no other information will be released Sunday.
Multiple agencies assisted the Sheriff’s Office.
INITIAL REPORT: The Winnebago County Sheriff’s Department responded to a crash on Hwy 91 near Wall St. around 3:00 a.m. Sunday.
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said all lanes both eastbound and westbound are affected, closing down Hwy. 91 at Wall St. near the City of Omro.
The alternate route for eastbound traffic suggested by WDOT is to take a right at Wall St. and turn left on Koro Rd. and head back to Hwy 91 eastbound. Westbound traffic is advised to do the reverse route.
The highway was reopened around 10 am.
No further details on the crash have been released.
