Indiana man who traveled to Oshkosh for sex with teen sentenced to federal prison
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - An Indiana man has been sentenced to federal prison for traveling to Wisconsin to have sex with an underage girl.
On Jan. 21, Ronald P. Ortega, 47, appeared before U.S. District Judge William C. Griesbach for a sentencing hearing. The judge sentenced Ortega to 15 years in federal prison and seven years on extended supervision.
Ortega will also have to register as a sex offender.
In June of 2020, Ortega started messaging someone he believed to be a 40-year-old Oshkosh woman. During these chats, he sent child pornography videos and told the woman he wanted to have sex with her 15-year-old daughter.
On July 6, Ortega traveled from Indiana to Oshkosh to meet the woman and her child at a motel. He had lingerie, sex toys and electronic devices. Prosecutors say he intended to made videos of himself having sex with the teen.
There was no Oshkosh woman and no teen daughter. Ortega had been chatting with an undercover law enforcement officer.
Ortega was arrested as part of Operation Kick Boxer, an effort targeting people who abuse children and distribute child pornography.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Milwaukee and Green Bay Offices and the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel Humble.
